Siena College
Real Trading and Finance Room Exposes Business Students

Technology plays a major role in business education at Siena College in Loudonville, New York, a suburban community just outside the state’s capital. All classrooms are electronically enhanced with PC’s, internet connection, VCR, and built-in projection devices. In addition, the School of Business has a Financial Technology Center that includes a Market Trading Room and Accounting Lab.

The Hickey Financial Technology Center was established to give business students at Siena College real-world exposure to the data and tools seen in today’s financial centers. The College joins only a handful of similar facilities across the country offering this type of experience to their students.

This high-tech suite offers the latest financial technology used every day in the world’s largest financial trading centers. The Center provides access to real-time stock market quotations as well as the latest market news and announcements. Detailed current and historical financial information is available for thousands of stocks, bonds and mutual funds. This information allows students and faculty to screen and analyze individual investment options as well as build and track portfolios across time. Regular instruction and access to these resources provides Siena College students with valuable skills for today’s job market.

Even the look and feel of the suite introduces students to the real-world environment of business. Each workstation in the William Raub market trading room is equipped with dual flat panel LCD screens giving the user access to vast amounts of data at one time. Data walls and a ticker constantly display the latest stock market quotations in the United States and around the world. The Hickey Financial Technology Center provides students and faculty with up-to-date financial and economic news and information. LCD screens in the Raub Market Trading Room, Alonge Accounting Laboratory and exterior corridor display market updates and world news from leading providers such as CNBC, CNN and MSNBC.

With the resources available in the Hickey Financial Technology Center, faculty are able to augment traditional classroom lecture with hands-on activities designed to merge both the theoretical and practical aspects of finance. Simulations using real or fictitious stocks and bonds as well as hands on projects and exercises help enrich the learning experience.

Experience real-world exposure to the data and tools seen in today’s financial centers. Siena College joins only a handful of similar facilities across the country offering this type of situation.
